Installing Mathematica and Getting a Key
INSTALLING
Un-Supported Computers: If you are using a computer not supported by Physics Computer Services, Mathematica for Windows and Mac is available for download from the FAS Software Downloads site. Mathematica and Matlab for Linux and Solaris are available from Physics Computing Services.
Supported Computers: If you are using a computer that we support, please create a help ticket by sending an descriptive e-mail to help@physics.harvard.edu and we will help install it for you. Either way, you will need to follow several steps to receive a key from FAS which will make the software functional.
OBTAINING A KEY
Regardless of which of the above install methods applies to you, after the software is installed, you must complete several steps to obtain a key from FAS. Please note: Computer Services cannot provide this key for you. Each key is unique and tied to the person who will be using it by their Harvard e-mail address.
Please read and follow these steps carefully. If Computer Services has already installed Mathematica for you, skip to #4.
1. You must have a valid Harvard e-mail address. You cannot proceed without this.
2. Download the installer from FAS Software Downloads and write down the license number shown there.
3. Extract (usually by just double-clicking) and then run the installer.
4. When prompted, select single machine and enter:
Name: Your full name
Organization: Harvard University
License number: (from FAS software site)
5. The installer will then generate a MathID number (like 1234-5678901-234): Write this down!
6. When prompted for a password, instead click the "Web" button. A page will load.
7. Select the version of Mathematica you are installing (from file name or FAS page)
8. Enter the MathID you just wrote down.
9. Click "Continue"
10. On the following page enter:
First Name: Your first name
Last name: Your last name
Organization: Harvard University
Department: Physics
Lab or facility: Jefferson Lab
Email address: your Harvard e-mail
11. Click "Continue".
12. You should eventually receive an email with a key and instructions. The speed with which this
happens is beyond our control. You can quit (or leave running) Mathematica setup and come back to this part again once your key arrives.
Your "MathPass" key number will look similar to: 9800-900-700:2:6:20051001
13. Just cut and paste the MathPass part into the password box in step 3 of the Mathematica setup (If you closed the program, you should be able to skip to part 3).
Please keep in mind that Physics Computing does not control these keys. Each key is tied to you, the user. FAS Knowledge Base article: installing Mathematica
